description: Gerson returned to landscape painting in the 1880s. He had a special liking for the mountains and was one of the first Polish artists to paint views of the Tatra Mountains. His late landscapes, characterized by an analytical approach to nature, devoid of idealization, were done based on plein-air studies. Therefore, it is no wonder that they are marked by the accuracy of painterly representation. In summer 1884, during a treatment stay in Krynica, Gerson produced several works showing motifs from the Pieniny mountains, captured at different times of day and in different atmospheric conditions. Fair Weather in the Pieniny Mountains shows mountain peaks seen from the bank of the Dunajec river. The freedom of brushwork gives the impression of an outdoor sketch. The artist tried to convey the changeable weather, to capture the fleeting impression. The synthetic composition is marked by the use of subdued colours. What is more, the intimate format and the lack of bravura in treatment give the Pieniny mountains austere, authentic beauty. Aleksandra Krypczyk
